INDONESIAN ARTS AND CRAFTS BY JOOP AVE

“The creative genius of the Indonesian people, especially in the production of crafts, has finally come full circle.” So says former Tourism Minister Joop Ave in the preface of this superb 228-page book that champions the full range of arts, crafts and design found throughout Indonesia. It starts with chapters on traditions, rituals and elements, then delves into material sources like earth, cloth, grass, metal and wood before addressing modern-day designs. The book is a tour de force of Indonesian expression, and is produced with the same care and attention to design as the pieces inside. Clearly not skimping in terms of its production or photography, the book surveys the arts and crafts market from ancient times through to contemporary homeware and fashion. One hopes it will be gifted to lovers of fine expression around the world. – Luke Clark
