KENNY SANTANA CHECKS OUT THE MAIN EVENTS ACROSS INDONESIA FROM JULY TO SEPTEMBER

18–19 July

Sea Eagle Boat Race, Batam

This annual event assembles 13 men in each boat, who compete for the best rowing team in their region. Taking place in Belakang Padang, a small island off Batam, the race attracts not only local teams, but also those from Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

Bali Kite Festival

During the summer in Padang Galak, near Sanur Beach, the Balinese send requests for rich harvests to the Hindu gods by flying kites. The festival also serves as a competition for kites of all shapes, sizes and colors. Book a date to go fly a kite.

Manchester United tour, Jakarta

The Red Devils are finally in town. Set to play an Indonesia All Star team, the English Premier League champions, sporting star names like Giggs, Rooney and Tevez, will bring the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium to a soccer frenzy.

Landing Soon #1 Exhibition, Jogjakarta

The works of Jakarta’s Wiyoga Muhardanto meet Dutch artist Rosalie Catherine Monod de Froideville at the Cemeti Art House. Muhardanto is noted for his ingenious sculptural takes on ordinary objects.

Eid celebration, Padang

Head to Bukittinggi in the Minangkabau highlands, 90km from Padang, for the merriest celebrations of the end of Muslim Ramadan fasting. Locals and visitors gather in the main square on the eve of Eid, when a firework display is held at Jam Gadang, West Sumatra’s most famous clock tower.
