Happy 41ST Mandala
Airline commits to a wider and greener vision
Mandala Airlines marked 41 years of operations in April by reiterating its commitment to expanded services, provided in an environmentally sustainable manner.
With the support of its modern and environmentally efficient fleet of Airbus A320 and Airbus A319 aircraft, Mandala confirmed it will expand its wings as a new-generation airline. An additional 25 Airbus A320 aircraft will be delivered between 2011 and 2014.
Each year, Mandala’s anniversary celebrations address certain social issues in Indonesia. This year, to mark its 41st anniversary, the airline launched its Movement for Environmental Awareness Program. “This program is designed as part of our commitment to be an environmentally friendly airline, a position reaffirmed through membership of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) 2009,” said President Director Diono Nurjadin. UNGC is committed to developing environmentally friendly business, and Mandala is the only airline operator in Indonesia that is a member, he added.
Mandala recently officially launched its Carbon Offset Program, encouraging passenger involvement. Collected donations will support environmental conservation in Indonesia, in the form of reforestation at Mount Gede Pangrango National Park in Sukabumi.
Mandala is also encouraging bike-to-work activities through its Fun Bike Program. To promote environmental understanding, the airline appointed Joice Pranata from SMA 8 Jakarta as an official Mandala Environment Ambassador. “Mandala’s environment ambassadors will promote and educate fellow students in all our destinations in Indonesia about environmental awareness, including greener aviation,” said Diono.

Having registered as a member of United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), Mandala committed itself to join and create a raft of programs related to a greener planet. One of these, Green Wave, is an ambitious global project encouraging young people to learn about biodiversity throughout 2010, which is the UN International Year of Biodiversity.
In a celebration of the huge variety of animals and plants on earth, this year people and organizations around the world are working to safeguard the earth’s irreplaceable natural wealth, and reduce the loss of biodiversity, with the destruction of rain forests being a prime example.
By becoming a Friend of Green Wave, Mandala Airlines has initiated its own Carbon Offset Program, becoming the first airline in Indonesia to introduce a passenger-focused approach, with the launch of its ‘Fly Carbon Free’ project, whereby passengers can elect to offset their carbon emissions during a flight, with a donation to the program. The money collected is then placed into approved environmental programs in Indonesia.
Mandala’s own carbon reduction initiatives resulted in a five percent reduction in emissions from the beginning of 2008 to the end of 2009. President Director of Mandala Airlines, Diono Nurjadin, said carbon off setting is part of the airline’s broader environmental strategy. “I am very proud to introduce this carbon neutral program. With this program, our passengers can elect to offset their carbon footprint by contributing to environmental sustainability programs in Indonesia.”
Fly Carbon Free enables passengers to calculate the emission levels for their flight and contribute to ‘off setting’ the CO2 emission. Passengers can get more information by visiting www.mandalaair.com.
“Our first environmental initiative will be with Green Radio and the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park to support reforestation within the National Park,” says Diono. “We will also provide an annual report on emission calculation and carbon compensation platforms for our passengers.”
Un network gets busy
Mandala commits to good corporate citizenship
Mandala has set about active involvement in activities promoting good corporate governance, propelled by the signing of the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in October 2009. Since then, Mandala has been involved in a progam of activities by the UNGC Indonesia network, called the Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN).
President Director of Mandala Airlines, Diono Nurjadin said the involvement of Mandala in the IGCN is helping to promote open cultural exchange and public responsibility. “As the first Indonesian airline member of UNGC, we are delighted to take part in the Indonesia Global Compact Network. Besides sharing experiences in the implementation of UNGC principles with other members, the network is also a place to develop partnerships that enable good corporate citizenship,” said Diono.
President of IGCN, Indonesia Global Compact Network, YW Junardy said that as a national carrier, Mandala has a key support role to play in the network. “All members in IGCN share the same vision and mission. I also recognize programs launched by Mandala Airlines to support the Global Compact, such as Fly Carbon Free.”
Mandala has contributed to the IGCN program Tjahaya – Curhat Buat Sahabat, which encourages less fortunate Indonesian children to make themselves heard, and in turn better their quality of life. Mandala has contributed airline tickets to fly trainers from across the country to Jakarta for training. The airline also provided air transportation during the Tri Conference Global Compact in Bali.
