Education’s great green
experiment starts in Ubud

THEY’RE THE KIDS GOING BACK TO NATURE AS PART OF A BOLD SCHOOLING EXPERIMENT. GRETEL HUNNERUP DISCOVERS

It has children, desks and the occasional blackboard, but little else is conventional about Bali’s Green School campus.

Its bamboo-built classrooms scattered across the eight-hectare parcel of land in Ubud have no walls. Butterflies drift through classrooms at their fancy, while barefoot students from around 20 countries look out on surrounding plots of jackfruit, bananas, snake beans and chili as they learn.

Classrooms are fitted with compost toilets, the wastes of which are converted into an odorless biogas and channeled to fire campus kitchen stoves. There isn’t a lunchbox in sight, because all 118 students are fed each day on the campus’ harvest. There are no candy-colored swings here either. Instead, spare time is spent fashioning fortresses out of palm fronds, tending to the resident goats, and practicing the Balinese martial art of mepantigan.

At once revolutionary and grassroots, Green School, now in its third year of operation, is a giant education experiment. The private start-up institution, covering preschool to grade nine, or freshman year, is the vision of John Hardy, the Canadian art college graduate who arrived in Bali in the 1970s, first making his name designing low-impact silver jewelry for travelers.

In 2007 he sold his stake in The John Hardy Company, now the largest luxury manufacturer in Bali, to pour his pennies into what he describes as his most difficult undertaking yet. The vision behind Green School is to immerse students in the environment, and in turn instill a sense of responsibility for the earth, inspiring them to help meet the challenges of an uncertain century.

“Our hope is that they will have the skills to do whatever they need to do in the world to maintain our planet, and enroll others in the possibility of becoming green,” says Hardy. “So if they’re bankers, I’m sure they’ll be green bankers. And if they’re lawyers, I’m sure they’ll be fighting for the side of the people.”

Hardy’s team of educators are asking students to embark on projects like creating water-trapping systems in the soil; using pigs instead of tractors to prepare plots for planting, and designing buildings using sustainable materials.

All this comes in addition to teaching traditional subjects such as math, biology and Bahasa Indonesia. Green School’s secondary school is built on the Cambridge International Curriculum for lower and upper secondary grades, ensuring a focus on recognized essential subjects alongside environmental education. The school plans to add grade 11 from 2012 and grade 12 by 2013, under the widely accepted International Baccalaureate system.

Local interests are not ignored. Around 20 percent of students are Indonesian children on scholarships. In addition, the school provides full-time work for around 35 local people, and gives local assistance with water management and bamboo planting, with plans to add English language classes. The school also leases its land, rather than buying it, in order to continue Balinese ownership.

Students like seventh-grader Dillon enjoy Green School’s hands-on learning. “I love working in the river because I’m amongst it. I’m not just studying it from a textbook,” he says, of the Ayung River snaking through the campus.

Near the circus-tent-inspired kindergarten classroom, little girls chorus the school song as they throw their papaya salad scraps to the chickens. A teacher meantime reveals the school has been dealing with an unusual problem; eager students are turning up too early.

The challenges at Green School though are numerous. Termites bore through untreated wood, bugs bite young limbs, and heavy rains cause the occasional classroom soaking. Then there’s the culture shock experienced by international students from cool climates and megacities – or the pressure from some parents for the school to be even more alternative.

The most pressing consideration is probably funding. In addition to Hardy’s original contribution, Green School gathers money through tuition fees (80 percent of students pay up to US$10,000 annually), building fees, and donations. But Green School has consumed about US$5 million so far, and its administrators are on a constant hunt for more supporters.

Hardy thinks his labor of love is scalable. “This is Green School number one, the seed,” he says. “Green School will be a success as it becomes self-sustainable and starts to multiply.”

Creating a green-centric school in a city of millions may appear challenging. But there are improvements in vertical farming, energy technology and water conservation happening constantly.

Hardy feels certain that a mutual concern for children and for the planet will eventually help to see his Bali idea become a global one. “We’ve had enquiries from numerous countries. I really believe there are like-minded people out there who will say, ‘Let’s build a green school too – let’s take this vision into the mainstream’.”

Dua pencipta tren
membentuk jalur tengah

“Bolehboleh saja jadi modern,” katanya. “Tapi Anda perlu berakar sebelum menjadi modern.”

Two trendsetters are forging
a middle path for Indonesian
architecture

ANDREW JANES MEETS TWO LOCAL ARCHITECTS SCHOOLED IN MODERNITY, YET INSPIRED BY THEIR INDONESIAN ROOTS

Sitting in his airy, high-ceilinged office in Bintaro, on the outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesian architect Yori Antar doesn’t have to think too hard when asked which of his buildings he is most proud of.

“It’s this one,” says the youthful-looking 47-year-old, referring to the office of his family firm Han Awal Partners, founded by his father, Han Awal, in 1970.

The building is a visual testament to Yori’s style, which he describes as modern tropical with traditional Indonesian influences. The ceilings are high and the windows are large, letting in air and lots of natural light. Affixed to the outer walls are lightweight metal trellises, already partially covered by the creeping foliage, which in a few more years will completely shroud the 11-year-old structure in greenery.

The offices wrap around a semi-enclosed courtyard with a pool and communal space for Yori’s staff to unwind and socialize. All the building’s materials are sourced locally, with Indonesian paintings and sculptures placed throughout. In the center of the rooftop garden is a round stone table, designed by Yori and inspired by megalithic art from Sumba. “I always bring prospective clients here,” he says, with a glint in his eye. “If they say, ‘I don’t like your offices’, then I say, ‘get another architect’.”

Yori’s good friend, Ridwan Kamil, is another architect at the forefront of creating a modern Indonesian style. He also chooses a very personal project when asked about his best work. For Ridwan, it is his own home in Bandung – made entirely from 30,000 used Red Bull bottles. The 38-year-old, who in 2004 set up his own company, Urbane, says he got the idea for the house while watching a construction worker guzzling Red Bull and throwing away the bottles.

Ridwan’s house, however, is less typical of his work. Urbane specializes in large-scale projects, striving to fuse modernity and Indonesian tradition, while respecting the local context. With a master’s degree in urban design from UC Berkley, Ridwan recently designed the Rasuna Epicentrum residential office and leisure complex in Jakarta, which is currently under construction.

Rejecting what he calls the egoistic, walled-off approach of many Indonesian architects, he focused instead on using pedestrian walkways and green spaces to bring the city back to the people. “A good design is like a Swiss army knife,” he says. “You can use it to solve many problems.”

For both architects, thorough research at the beginning of the creative process is essential. “Clients are often unsure of what they want,” says Yori. He spends a lot of time with new clients, asking them about their interests, and their favorite buildings, films and music. “My ideas come from them,” he says. “Everyone is unique – so I don’t want to kill my client’s character.”

Ridwan uses a contextual method to get ideas, reading histories and novels about the area in which he’s building, as well as looking at old photos and surrounding buildings. Then he looks at the international best practice for the type of building he is designing. “After that, usually you have got the idea coming.” It’s an approach that seems to be paying off: Urbane has won 20 design competitions in the last five years.

Jumping on a plane provides further inspiration for Ridwan, with Barcelona, Tokyo and Hong Kong among his favorite cities. Every year he takes his 30-strong staff on a trip to an Asian city, while a smaller group of senior staff heads to a European city. “Travel is vital,” he says. “Everything I see becomes my inspiration.”

Inspired by traditional styles from all corners of Indonesia, Yori is particularly enthusiastic about his firm’s ongoing project, sponsored by the charitable Tirto Utomo Foundation, to research and preserve traditional Indonesian building styles. The project recently took him and his team to the remote alpine village of Wae Rebo in Flores, home to the last three remaining examples of a traditional style of dome-shaped thatched communal houses.

“It was like an architectural Jurassic Park,” he says. Together with the local villagers, Yori and his team constructed four more of the houses, and collected and saved information on their design for posterity. He has done similar endeavors in Kalimantan, with two more projects underway in Nias and Sumbawa.

With a new decade arriving, Ridwan says his future ambition is to create more humane urban environments – and use architecture to help solve urban problems. “The challenge for Indonesian architecture,” he says, “is to find a third way between the super modern and the very traditional.”

Yori agrees, lamenting the fact that many young Indonesian architects know more about international styles of architecture than local traditions. “It’s okay to be modern,” he says. “But you need to be modern with roots.”

DATANG JAUH DARI EKUADOR, SEBASTIAN PAREDES YANG SEMAKIN FASIH BERBAHASA INDONESIA BERKOMENTAR TENTANG THE NEW MANDALA

From Ecuador to Indonesia, We meet a banking leader

HAILING FROM ECUADOR AND NOW NEAR FLUENT IN BAHASA INDONESIA, SEBASTIAN PAREDES PRESIDENT DIRECTOR OF BANK DANAMON, SPEAKS ABOUT MANDALA’S TRANSFORMATION

What do you think about the New Mandala?
We are very impressed with the new armada of today’s Mandala and its sophisticated Airbus A320s and A319s fleet. We like the new spirit, which has transformed it to a brand new modern airline, supported by professional investors and world-class management. We wish great success to Mandala with its new branding and strategy, and to it becoming one of the leading airlines in Indonesia and the region.

How can Mandala benefit Bank Danamon in providing air transportation solutions?
We are always on the look out for new partnerships and want to provide the best services and solutions for our customers – especially our card business customers, who are widely spread in cities across Indonesia. Therefore, a demand for air transportation to help our customers connect with each other is a must.

On the company’s side, Danamon with an extensive network of more than 1,700 branches and approximately 40,000 employees, including its Danamon Simpan Pinjam (DSP) and Adira Finance in all 33 provinces in Indonesia would certainly need a proven transportation fleet with nationwide coverage. This collaboration will benefit Mandala, our valued customers, as well as Danamon employees.

How can Bank Danamon better partner Mandala?
Danamon and Mandala are currently working on several partnership plans. These include Mandala becoming a merchant for Danamon’s credit card and cross-sell promotions, such as the Mandala Fair, and budget packages with payment with our Visa, MasterCard and American Express Cards. We are also considering an opportunity to conduct joint programs on Danamon-Mandala co-brand credit cards, and to appoint Mandala as our corporate travel partner. In November 2009, we partnered with Mandala to support the the Indonesia Travel and Holiday Fair 2009 (ITHF 2009) – which provided great holiday and travel offers for both our customers and employees.

MANDALA’S BENCHMARK T3 BASE GIVES ITS JAKARTA PASSENGERS AN ADDED EDGE

In line with its commitment to provide the best passenger services, Mandala has stepped up the promotion of its state-of-the-art operations in Jakarta, at Terminal 3 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Together with the local airport authority, PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II, Mandala is proudly promoting what it confidently calls Indonesia’s greenest airport terminal. “T3 was designed using an environmentally friendly concept and has supporting facilities that improve a passenger’s experience,” says Terminal 3’s general manager, Salahudin Rafi.

Terminal 3 has become a pilot project for implementation across all airports in Indonesia, he notes. “We’ve used a concept of ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ across the whole operation, including a water processing centre to recycle used water. In addition, the utilization of glass and natural light in the terminal area reduces electricity consumption during the day,” he explains.

Mandala Airlines was a launch partner with T3, relocating its operations in line with the terminal’s launch on April 20, which was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Terminal 3 was built on an area of 48.5 hectares and was designed with five piers. It can accommodate 20 million passengers per year.

Mandala’s president director, Diono Nurjadin said relocation from Terminal 1C to the modern new terminal has provided an additional edge for the airline over its competitors. “This of course improves the convenience and services for the passengers.”

Blending modern architecture with a fun traveling experience, T3 provides passengers with a positive and friendly terminal ambience as well as an interesting airside view. The terminal has a smoking room and free Wifiinternet access.

Another advantage is its integrated reservation system, where passengers can book the hotel of their choice from the terminal. T3 provides a total of four e-reservation counters in its arrival and departure areas, as well as fresh drinking water stations that are guaranteed to be safe, thanks to laboratory tested filtration.

Another point of difference for T3 is its meeting point, which, unlike existing terminals, is located inside the terminal.

Here, passengers, fetchers and visitors can all meet at the same spot. The terminal’s information counter is available 24 hours, and other onsite facilities include banks, ATMs, restaurants, cafés and minimarts. “Passengers may also reserve a wide range of official Terminal 3 public transportation at the common use travel counter,” added Rafi.
